Empowering Youth: Pathways to Professional Careers in Sports
Our Hong Kong Foundation (OHKF) published its advocacy research “Empowering Youth: Pathways to Professional Careers in Sports”. It aims to build a talent development pathway that encompasses both athletes and non-athletes. Phase I (the current stage) focuses on the primary and secondary school stages. Phase II will cover post-secondary education and post-graduation stages and will also explore retired athletes’ career transitions.
OHKF conducted a survey between February and March 2026, and received 1,098 valid responses from more than 40 secondary schools. More than one-fourth (28%) of respondents are interested in pursuing a career in the sports industry.
To enhance young people’s interest in and understanding of the sports industry, OHKF proposes nine policy recommendations. Key recommendations include forming a dedicated team to coordinate sports career exposure opportunities, incentivising “M” Mark event organisers to include stronger youth engagement elements, and enhancing flexibility in the use of LCSD sports facilities.
